iTunes "Genius"

I've been using iTunes for quite a while, not really by choice, but because I have a Mac and can't use anything else because I'm not a nerd.

iTunes isn't the best program ever, but it's not the worst. I like some of the basic features like play count and how it kind of organizes my music, but over all it's nothing special.

So when I heard about genius, I didn't think much of it because it just seemed like a way to sell more music. I even played with it a few times and got confused and never used it again.

Then my computer broke and I had to take it into an Apple store to be repaired. Without the Apple care it would have cost me $800, but I have Apple care for 3 years so I paid nothing!

When I finally got my computer back up and running I decided to give genius a try. It's actually really cool, but I don't think it will work for everyone.

The cool thing about genius is that it kind of makes play lists that capture the essence of a time period. Sure not all the songs are from that time period, but they all fit in, it's like a good radio station.

The reason this won't work for everyone is because you need a shit load of music to ensure you get a variety of songs and artists for each mix. If you only have a couple hundred songs, your play list is going to sound like it was created by Clear Channel.

I have about 200 different artists on my computer consisting of about 6,000 songs. I have an additional 40,000 songs on a hard drive, so yeah, I'm pretty awesome... But this is 2009, who the fuck doesn't have 40,000 songs on a hard drive?

So, if you're tired of listening to the same songs from the same artists, and you want to dive deeper into your intimidating music collection, you should give genius a try.
